The NEXT retail chain was launched in February 1982 and the first store opened with women’s, men’s and children’s fashion clothing ranges.
Today NEXT trades from more than 500 stores in the UK and Eire and around 200 stores in 40 countries overseas. Over the last few years several larger format fashion and home stores have opened across the UK. In August 2011, NEXT opened its first combined fashion, home and garden store at Shoreham-by-Sea. 2014 saw the opening of 2 further large home and fashion stores which were built from the ground up. These home and fashion stores, in Hedgend and Maidstone, boast aspirational out of town architecture and were followed by the opening of the High Wycombe super store in 2015.
The groundbreaking mail order operation NEXT Directory launched in 1988 with a hardback book containing 350 pages, creating the blueprint for catalogue retailing. Online shopping was introduced in 1999 and the entire book became available to shop from on the internet, page by page – another first in home shopping in the UK. NEXT Directory now also serves customers in around 70 countries outside the UK.
NEXT acquired the former BHS Department Store within the White Rose Shopping Center in 2016. Once opened it replaced a much smaller store already within the White Rose. The new store which is one of the shopping centres anchor units was originally built in the 1990’s. The £6m project included the stripping of all previous BHS shop fitting and services amongst all the new mechanical services a new Life Safety Sprinkler installation was provided and fed from the Centres Base Build Pumped Supplies.
The store is laid across two large sales floors accessed via two separate ground floor mall and car park end entrances. Within the 18-week programme of works a new poly-carbonate roof atrium was added as well major changes to the upper structural floor. The previously centrally located escalators moved out to either store end to create a more spacious linear feel. All sales areas were finished with plasterboard suspended ceiling containing many NEXT shop fit features including “Moon Rings” and “Suspended Fins” The latest NEXT lighting schemes were incorporated throughout. A Costa Coffee concession was also included in the overall scheme. Other than some small exceptions. All new areas were sprinkler protected.
A & F Sprinklers designed, installed new sprinkler protection throughout the stores sales and staff areas.
The sprinkler works took approximately 3 months to complete. Each floor was zoned to Life Safety sprinkler requirements, new pipes served to protect both suspended ceilings and void. The zones were fitted with self-test flow checking units. A total of 400 ceiling heads and 600 void sprinkler heads were installed and designed to LPC rules incorporating BSEN 12845. The NEXT design team made several changes to the shop fit whilst installation was on going, this presented some serious changes programme wise but ultimately overcome by all trades and the store opened its doors on the programmed opening date of 27June.
